Paula M. Carstensen is Special Counsel at Bates & Carey LLP in the Appellate Practice Group. She is a post-trial and appellate specialist who has been retained to serve as appellate counsel, arguing cases and monitoring trials nationwide. As appellate counsel, Paula works with trial counsel to develop pretrial motions, motions in limine, motions for directed verdict and jury instructions that raise and preserve significant issues for appeal. Paula has been called upon by clients to aggressively litigate pretrial issues by filing interlocutory appeals, mandamus actions, or requests for supervisory orders from trial court rulings. She has represented clients before the Illinois Supreme Court, Illinois Appellate Courts, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the reviewing courts of Missouri, New York, New Jersey, Kansas, and Wisconsin. She has worked on significant post-judgment issues in a variety of catastrophic injury cases, such as fault allocation, the application of the Koetecki cap, and punitive damages awards.

Before entering private practice, Paula developed a reputation as an outstanding appellate advocate in the Cook County States Attorney’s Office where she defended and prosecuted over 100 criminal and civil appeals.

Paula received a J.D. from the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law, graduating with highest honors.

She is admitted to the Illinois bar and has been admitted to practice before the following courts: United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois.
