Scott Carey, a founding partner of BatesCarey LLP, passed away on the morning of Monday, August 14, 2017.  Scott was an insurance industry trailblazer in the area of transportation and rail law, and had been a fixture of the Bermuda insurance market since its inception in the mid-1980s.  In 1999, Scott joined with his partner, Robert J. Bates, Jr., to form what became one of the most highly regarded coverage firms in the nation, BatesCarey LLP.

"Sitting beside Scott on the Management Committee and watching this firm flourish for almost 20 years, I am constantly reminded, grateful and proud of having been able to put my name and reputation next to Scott Carey's," said Bob Bates.  "His leadership in helping guide this business for two decades has been nothing short of incredible, and I know that the many attorneys who have launched their careers under Scott will join me in knowing that we are forever indebted to him and the positive impact he has left on all of us."

Scott's career saw him in the trenches for his insurance clients in some of the largest mass tort battles the country has ever seen, including breast implant litigation, TMJ implant litigation, and almost every major rail disaster in North America.  Up through his final days in the office, Scott was honored by his peers with recognitions such as Best Lawyers in America (2008-2017), International Who's Who of Insurance & Reinsurance Lawyer (2003-2017), Illinois Super Lawyers (2005-2017), and Chambers USA (2008-2017).

"To many of us who learned our trade in the shadow of Scott, he was much more than a co-worker, or boss, he was a mentor in every sense of the word," said BatesCarey partner, David Alt.  "Through Scott we learned how to flex our advocacy, how to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, and the importance of always balancing being a good lawyer with being an even better person.  He has left a strong and grateful firm to continue in his tradition."

Due in large part to Scott's leadership and vision, BatesCarey has carved out a reputation for unsurpassed excellence in the counsel it brings to the insurance industry.  It will be due in large part to this legacy that Scott left for our team here that this reputation and the expectation of excellence will continue into the future.  And for that, both our team and our clients thank Scott and will miss him.
